What is NevaCal Wiki?
It is a wiki
NevaCal Wiki is a wiki that uses the MediaWiki software like the most famous wiki of all, Wikipedia. That means that if you already know how to use Wikipedia or any of its related sites, then you will have a pretty good idea how to use this site. If you are new to wikis in general, Wikipedia has an excellent introduction and editing tutorial.
It is a helpful resource
We are building a helpful and free buyers guide, customer reviews, and glossary for a wide variety of things people buy. It's a community resource, and you, along with our staff, can edit and add content to them.
It is a catalog and marketplace
NevaCal™ Auctions & Sales, the company that operates this site, sells a variety of items through eBay auctions, Craigslist, and directly from this site. Our wiki is an online catalog of items we are currently auctioning or selling online, will be selling soon, and have sold in the past.
It is a community
We encourage you to login (or register) and join us. We are a small, but growing, community, and we welcome you to it. We have some policies and guidelines that we expect you to follow if you participate.
What is NevaCal™ Auctions & Sales?
NevaCal™ Auctions & Sales is the online sales arm of NevaCal™ Commerce and Distribution. Our headquarters in Nevada, and we are based in California (thus our trade name, NevaCal).
We operate this site as both a commercial venture (to sell items to interested buyers) and an educational community (helping to educate and entertain our site's visitors). We do not feel that these two goals are incompatible.
Where is everyone?
As of August 2009, NevaCal Wiki is just getting started. We are currently building a lot of behind-the-scenes infrastructure that doesn't attract much attention yet. Within a month, we should start displaying inventory online. Our community resources should begin appearing in earnest in the following month.
By November, we should be ready to announce that we are open for beta testing. That doesn't mean you can't start in now. It just means that the site is still under considerable construction at this time. Things might even break from time to time. If you are willing to put up with occasional problems while we get things working, then join in!
We would especially love to have experienced editors from other wikis join us in helping to build the community portions of this site.
Copyrights and licenses
You might be wondering how we plant to license our site's content. It is currently a mix of both freely-licensed content and commercial content.
The free licenses we are using are the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License 3.0 (United States) dual-licensed with the GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts). This is the same license combination as found on Wikipedia.
These licenses apply to the following namespaces only:
- Category
- Glossary
- Guide (Buyers Guide)
- Review (Customer Reviews)
- Template
- User
- The associated Talk spaces
We are likely to add additional namespaces to the list once we more clearly determine what type of information will be included and exactly where it will be stored. Also some namespaces (notably Main and MediaWiki) likely will contain a mix of freely-licensed and commercial material. We will determine a way to clearly differentiate the two.
The rest of the site is copyright by NevaCal™ Commerce and Distribution, and it may not be reproduced or reused without prior written permission.
